Before I had kids I would take time to go out and photograph for myself. The joy of this was I had lots of time and no pressure. Now that I have kids,it's really hard to find the time to shoot for myself. I see lots of things that I want to stop and photograph but with kids, I have other agendas. The other day, we were at a fair and I wanted to spend the time walking around photographing but I had to be a dad and enjoy the rides with my kids. Don't get me wrong, I love the rides! We found oneroller coasterwith no lines and no adults allowed so the kids rode it over and over again. This gave me about 15 minutes to photograph the things right in front of me. It wasn't what I was hoping for but I was still happy with the results.

In the past, when a job was completed, the film was stored in an archival filing cabinet. With digital it's not that easy. Years ago I converted my darkroom into a server room. The room has grown from a simple place to hold hard drives to holding servers for FTP, stock sales, web hosting, FileMaker server and photo archiving. As the room grows, so does the heat output. It's now producing so much heat and noise that I need to get an AC unit to cool things down. I have an air conditioning unit on order with a local vender. Hopefully I can get it installed next week.
Location
The art of packing for location. I try and pack everything very efficiently so it all fits inside my minivan. Everything then needs to fit on two carts no wider than a standard office door.Clientsarealwaysamazed at howmuchIcanfit.

When I travel, I am often compelled to photograph unique buildings or structures. Sometimes they speak to me with a strong American style, other times I just see an aesthetic or composition that appeals to me. The places are full of history. The photos below were taken in Charleston, South Carolina. It was so hot and humid I had to drive with the air conditioning off. If I didn't the camera lens and the P65+ digital back would fog up as soon as I stepped outside into the hot air.

I'm off to South Carolina for vacation and I'm bringing a couple of things with me. My wife walked by, took one look at everything and said, "aren't we going on vacation?" I guess I don't need all of this to relax on the beachbut you never know. Missing in the photo is the Canon G10, which took this wonderful snapshot-looking photo. I'll try to post photos from the road if I can.

Can you count the bricks?
Here's the view from my studio window as seen by the Phase One p65+. I took this handheld with the Mamiya 645 with a 80mm lens. The old buildings really help show off the amazing detail the p65+ canachieve. It's the 8x10 for the digital world.

It's all about megapixel

I've been running the Phase One P65+ through some tests to see how it improves over the P45. The first and most obvious is it's 60megapixels. 39 megapixel for the p45. The 60 megapixel translates into a 173 MB (8-bit) TIFF file. That's up from the 112 MB file the P45 produced.
When shooting products it's important to be able to pull out all the fine details of thematerialused to construct the product. The example below of the MacBook Pro shows how well the detail holds up in the metal and the shift key. The added megapixel will contribute to sharper images and the ability to crop and still retain a large file size. Looks like I'll have to step up my dusting of the product before shooting, everything shows.

I use Apple's photo program, Aperture, for my photo workflow. Now that I've added theabilityto download a PDF of my portfolio from my website, I needed a fast and easy way to make them. Using Aperture's book layout as acustomlayout program I was able to make the PDF layout just how I wanted. I can add, delete andrearrangepages on the fly. Photos can be changed with a simple drag and drop. After I made the layout, I selected "Print" and then"Save as PDF." Yet this gave me a file that was about 100 MBway too big for adding to my website. Using "PDF Shrink" I was able to save a PDF compression action as a service. The service is thenavailablevia any program. Now when I save a PDF from Aperture I can select my newcustom websiteaction, producing a file that's only 8 MB verses 100 MB. Sounds complicated, but it makes a very simple workflow.
PhaseOne
Just got a call that my PhaseOne P65+ has arrived in LA. I should have it by Thursday. I'll have a day to test it and make sure it's working bug free. At the same time I'll also try and do some side by side test with the PhaseOne p45 and Canon 1Ds...

At the same time I'll also try and do some side by side test with the PhaseOne p45 and Canon 1Ds Mark III. I'll post the results of the tests here, so check back.
